The area of the district is approximately 2085 sq. km. bordered by Tibet in the North, Bhutan in the South-West and Sela ranges separate West Kameng  district in the East. The HQ of this district is Tawang.
The name TAWANG derives from some bearings on surroundings. But people's interpretation is that the name TAWANG was given by Mera Lama in the 17th century.
One can reach Tawang from other parts of the country via Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. From Guwahati or Tezpur, one has to go to Bhalukpong in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh and from there via Bomdila and Sela Pass one can go to Tawang by road.

The name of the district is derived from the Kameng river, a tributary of the mighty Brahamputra, that flows through the district.West Kameng district is a mountainous tract in Arunachal Pradesh which covers an area of approximately 7422 Sq. Km. In 1980 the Kameng district was bifurcated into two district, namely, West Kameng and East Kameng. West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh is located at 260 54' to 280 01'North Latitude and 910 30' to 920 40' East Longitude. The altitudes of the district varies from 650` to 13714 ft. The district is surrounded by Tibet region of China in the North, Bhutan on the West Kameng and East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh are in the North West and East respectively. The Southern boundary adjoins Sonitpur District of Assam. The HQ of this district is Bomdila.

East Kameng district is situated in the Western part of Arunachal Prdesh which exactly lies to the east of West Kameng District. The area of the district is 4134 Sq. Kms with headquaters at Seppa. It is lying between 92.36' E and 93.24' E longitudes and 26.56' to 27.59' N latitudes. The district is predominantly habited by the Scheduled Tribes. the major tribes inhabitating this district are Nishang, Akas, Myis and the Puroiks (Sulung). The HQ of this district is Seppa.
