Naharlagun Feb. 17 - The 30th Oriah festival of the Wanchos was
celebrated centrally at Longding with traditional fervor and gaiety.
Speaking as the chief guest Civil Supply and Health Minister C C Singpho
said that it was a wonderful opportunity for him to be able to see the
colourful folk dances of the Wanchos and appreciated the Wanchos for
successfully preserving their rich culture. He asked them to maintain
unity and peace as without these no development is possible. In
appreciation the minister donated Rs. 25,000/- to the committee.
Participating in the celebration as guest of honour Phosum Khimhun, MLA
while greeting the people said that he was deeply impressed by the rich
culture of the Wanchos and asked them to leave no stone unturned to
preserve their rich culture for posterity. He further said that religion
and culture were two separate entities and asked them not to be
confused. He also donated Rs. 10,000/0 to the Oriah committee. N.
Tingkhatra, Environment and Forest Minister while addressing the
gathering dwelt at length on the developmental aspects and asked the people to work
hard to self reliant.
Folk dances, community feast and display of log drum beatings were the
main highlights of the day long celebrations. Later Singpho accompanied
by Tingkhatra, MLAs, DC and SP inspected the ADC office and Community
Health Centre at Longding. Discussions on preservation of culture and
cultural programmes were organized as a part of the celebrations.
