SUCCESS STORY OF A PROGRESSIVE FARMER

ITANAGAR, JULY 7- Agriculture is the mainstay of the people of Changlang district. More than 95 of rural population depend on it. In Changlang district with the HQ Changlang itself cash crop production will prove to be good income generation for farmers, reports DIPRO Changlang.

Though, entire district has productive belts except a few areas, valleys and hill-lock pockets give bumper harvest. Proper marketing facility is the main bottleneck. Due to constant efforts of the department, growers are diverted to agriculture and started applying improved/ modem techniques for cultivation. The department is providing all sorts of possible assistance like improved seeds, implements, chemical fertilizer, p.p.chemicals/ equipments and technical know-how including transportation facility for marketing of surplus produce.  To name one such beneficiary who had been doing an exemplary job in mechanize farming, Shri Happa Taidong of Kengkhu village, owns an area of 1[one] hect under wet rice cultivation [WRC], 3 [three]hects under jhum, and 1[one] hect under orange garden. With his hard labour he has been growing varieties of paddy like Lahi, Chamnyak, Khadam , Chamlun in his field. Near about 30 qtls per hect paddy is produced by him under Jhum cultivation.

Beside paddy the farmer opts for Maize, colocasia, cassava, millets are grown along with local pulses but the area is not that fertilized which hampers crop yield. He has also planted 1[one] hect tea, which is in 2nd year stage. Because of his sincerity and devotion to his work the department during the year 2003-04 provided Mr. Happa, govt. subsidy of Rs.30,000/=for purchase of power tiller under macro management programme. He had contributed Rs.80, 000/=and purchased a power tiller which is in use for community and self. He provides the power tiller on hire basis to other farmers in a nominal rate. On the same year he had also been provided with 1[one] no. of power sprayer on subsidy. Considering his keen interest on mechanized farming, he was also provided Rs .60, 000/=subsidy for tractor during the year 2004-05. He has decided to provide the tractor on subsidy for transportation and for tillage operations.

Mr. Happa is also trying hard to mare the farming community of his village and the adjacent village to take interest in mechanized
farming which would help the community to enhance the socio-economic condition of the farmers. The example laid by Shri Happa Taidong,
depicts that hard labour and conviction can certainly raise the living standard of our poor farmers, the report added.
