Press Release (No. 252)

Naharlagun:- The State Governor S.K. Singh currently on a study tour of easternmost parts of the State visited the Indo-Myanmar border at Pangsu Pass, 117 Km from Changlang yesterday. He was accompanied by the State Assembly Speaker Setong Sena and a number of Senior Officials and Public Leaders, according to a report from Secretary to Governor.

At the Myanmar border he was received with full honours by the Myanmarese Military, Administrative and border trade officials of the neighbouring country. They insisted on taking the Governor and his entourage inside Myanmar territory to show him the world famous Lake of No Return and the proposed facilities for managing border trade which is to commence shortly. He advised the concerned authorities of both sides to work rapidly to commence border trade. He also gave detailed instructions to the PWD authorities to improve the Jairampur-Pangsu Pass Road at the earliest. This road is a part of the Second World War vintage Stilwell Road which passes through the mountainous terrain here. The boulders and mud make this road impassable except for four wheel drive automobiles.

Later on his return to Nampong, the Governor met the notables and leaders of the area and had a detailed meeting also with village elders and Gaon Buras. They complained bitterly about the oppressive and violent activities imposed on them by underground elements from the neighbouring state and appealed to the Governor to persuade the Govt. of India to put an end to these. The Governor assured action against those greedy extortionists.

The village elders urged that Rima-Putok, a most vulnerable and isolated area requires Circle Officer and staff as also an Army post to be established so that they are all protected and well administered. The infrastructure is established and personnel must be put in place. The Governor assured them that necessary enquiries will be made and early action would be ensured. Later today, the Governor is visiting Kengkhu Village, the local hospital, craft centre etc. of Changlang Circle and is holding meetings with Public Leaders and District Officials. He is holding a separate meeting the Assam Rifle authority over lunch at Circuit House, Changlang to sort out certain urgent issues, the report added.
