TOURISM IN WEST KAMENG DISTRICT
The department of tourism is giving effort in promoting the tourism industry in West Kameng district by developing infrastructures such as accommodation, transportation and guides
etc. and renovation of the existing tourist lodges to attract domestic and foreign tourists. It is also identifying tourist-interested places and exploring further scopes to improve
the inflow of tourist to the district. The department is also helping in creating employment to the educated unemployed youth by sending them for courses and other activities under tourism
sector.
Mr. Takeng Jamoh, District Tourism Officer, West Kameng district informed that there are two tourist lodges in the district, i.e. at Bomdila and at Dirang. Large numbers of tourists utilizes
these lodges. A total of four thousand and six hundred domestic visitors utilized these facilities in the year 2002-2003. Largest numbers are from West Bengal, Assam and from Mumbai. He added that to encourage more visitors in the area, three cafeterias are been constructed at Tippi, Sessa and Sange Jong. On revenue collection, the DTO (Tou) said, in the year 2002-2003, the revenue collected from Bomdila tourist lodge is Rs. 2,74,400.00 and Rs. 52,600.00
from Dirang one. Due to shortage of rooms many tourist have to go to private hotels. Therefore, he feels that with extension works in these lodges, more revenues can be collected.
Regarding, places of tourist interest, Mr. Jamoh informed about 7th Century monastery of Lhayala at Morshing, 17th Century Dirang Fort, the solitary megalithic site at Jameri, ruin fort
constructed around 10th to 12th centuries of Bhalukpong, the Gyuto Tantric Monastery at Tenzingaon, the Gentse Gaden Rabgyel ling Monastery, Upper Gonpa, Bomdila and the Hot Spring at Dirang.
The Tourism officers added that some government institutions like the
Farmer's Training Centre, Salari in Dirang circle, the State Horticultural Farm, Shergaon, the Regional Apple Nursery, Dirang, the Regional sheep Breeding Farm, Sangti, the national research
centre on yak at Dirang, the Government trout hatchery at Shergaon, the Orchid Research and Training, Tippi, Bhalukpong etc. can be developed into tourist attraction in the near future. He
stressed on developing the district museum and showroom of District Textile and Handicraft center, Bomdila in tourist attraction circuit.
